I had a meal two nights ago at Aquavit which was, without qualification, the worst I have ever experienced. I have been cooking and studied same for many years and have eaten at fine restaurants all over the world. In addition, I have spent a good deal of time in Sweden. The meal was a cacaphony of small morsels paired with squeezebottle dabs of uncomplimentary sauces. `Shock and Awe` seemed the principal aim here--the idea was to stun rather than delight the palate. I found the result dizzying, and I can say that all the confusion produced not a single delicious mouthful. Also, ingredients (sweetbreads, lobster) were of mediocre quality and preparation. To summarize: `The Emperor's New Clothes.` (Best summed up: tasting one of the small items following the dreadful desserts, my companion said, `This tastes like Windex.` He was right.
